ABOUT THE AUTHOR

TRICIA GOYER is the author of twenty books including From Dust and Ashes, My Life UnScripted, and the children's book, 10 Minutes to Showtime. She won Historical Novel of the Year in 2005 and 2006 from ACFW, and was honored with the Writer of the Year award from Mt. Hermon Writer's Conference in 2003. Tricia's book Life Interrupted was a finalist for the Gold Medallion in 2005. In addition to her novels, Tricia writes non-fiction books and magazine articles for publications like Today's Christian Woman and Focus on the Family. Tricia is a regular speaker at conventions and conferences, and has been a workshop presenter at the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) International Conventions. She and her family make their home in the mountains of Montana.

MY REVIEW

I was pulled in from the start with this book. Not only did the back cover copy intrigue me with the concept of a woman traveling west on an orphan train, but the barren Montana setting and the rich cast of characters only added to the depth to be found within this novel. The pairing of Tricia with Ocieanna, who's edited several of Tricia's novels, is a true winning combination of writing skill and talent. If you love a western setting, you're going to love this newest release from the Love Finds You line of books from Summerside Press.

1. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Julia would be homemade peach. She's sweet and simple!

2. Are there any themes in Wild West Christmas that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

The theme that God is our true home is a strong theme. I believe this is a theme that has been strong in our family, too. God called us to Montana in 1995--away from our family and friends. He has done wonderful things for us here and we've never regretted it!

3. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next book comes out February 2009 ... All Things Hidden. It's part of Guidepost's Home to Heather Creek Series.

The past is brought to light...

Charlotte is cleaning out the basement of Bedford Community Church when she comes across a tattered and yellowed newspaper article. The clipping, published more than a century ago, implicates her great-great-grandfather in the loss of funds intended to help finish building the church. Charlotte has heard stories about the incident through the years, but now it seems the past has come back to haunt her. Is it just her imagination or are people treating her differently now that they think she’s descended from a crook? Will Charlotte be able to clear her family’s name once and for all?

Meanwhile, Sam is spending time with a new girl in town—and is keeping secrets from his grandparents about where they go. Christopher is trying to get an article published in the local paper, and Emily reluctantly partners with a foreign exchange student on a class project and eventually comes to see that they’re not that different after all. As old secrets are brought to light, the whole family is reminded that the truth is often more complicated than it seems.

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I wanted to write a book about a ‘good girl’ who’s never been challenged to stand up for her faith. She’s lived a very protected life and it hasn’t been hard to be a Christian. But the day has come when, to do the right thing, she has to risk everything, and suddenly she finds that her steady faith isn’t so easy to hang on to when her life is at stake. That’s Annette in Cowboy Christmas. A life long good girl who’s just fumbling every challenge she meets, but her faith is solid so she keeps coming back, trying to do it all right.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

In general ways, I see Annette’s story as my own. I’ve had a very good, safe life. Wonderful Christian parents. Marriage to a man of faith. I’ve wondered if I really had to stand strong for God, what would I do? I’d like to believe I’d face anything courageously for God. But we hear about the suffering people undergo as Christians in parts of the world where Christianity is terribly persecuted and I always hope and pray I could die for my faith and speak truth to power at any cost. So I made Annette do it instead of me.

3. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Annette is Rocky Road. She’s so full of gifts, so full of a sweet faith. But she keeps surprising poor Elijah, too. An occasional crunch he doesn’t expect, like when she uses a length of pipe to fight off the bad guy, right when he was there to be her knight in shining armor.

Elijah and ice cream. . .I’m having a little trouble with that. I adored Elijah. He’s been through something terrible and guilt is eating him up inside. But he’s such a sweetheart. And he loves his mother even though she’s a nag. Is that a flavor? Can you find a flavor in that? Let’s call him Chocolate/chocolate chip. That makes no sense but I’m hungry now so you’ve done your damage, Tiff.

4. Are there any themes in Cowboy Christmas that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

The theme I wanted was to live bravely for Christ. To believe that God is with you through the good and the bad. Annette is so bend on being courageous. . .especially when she fails over and over, that she fails to see the hand of God protecting her and guiding her.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The scene where Annette was getting swept down the river was hard. An action scene is always a lot of work because, at least for me, it needs to be so tight and so fast paced and I can only achieve that through revisions, many, many revisions. So I need to go over it a lot of times. I can do it, I just can’t yet learn to do it naturally.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next release is The Husband Tree, coming in January. It’s a sequel to Montana Rose which released in July. I am completely in love with this book. I had so much fun with these two characters, Belle Tanner, a secondary character in Montana Rose, and Silas Harden.

Belle Tanner buries her third worthless husband and makes a vow over his shallow grave. She’s learned her lesson. No more men.

Silas Harden just lost his second ranch because of a woman. The first deserted him when times got tough. Now he’s had to quit the whole state of New Mexico to avoid a trumped-up shotgun wedding and the noose of matrimony. He’s learned his lesson. No more women.

Belle needs hired hands to move a cattle herd late in the season and there’s no one around but seemingly aimless Silas. She hires him reluctantly.

Silas signed on, glad for the work, though worried about a woman doing such a thing as hiring drovers, only to find out he’s the lone man going with five woman, including a baby still in diapers. After the cattle drive is over, he might as well shoot himself to speed up the process of being embarrassed to death.

A fast approaching winter.

The toughest lady rancher you’ve ever seen.

A cynical cowboy who has to convince five women he’s right for their ma. . .and then convince himself.

And one thousand head of the crankiest cattle who have ever been punched across the backbone of the Rockies.

MY REVIEW

Wow! As many already know, I love historical romance. As a historical author myself, though, I am often quite picky about the books I read. Erica has done an amazing job with her research of Minnesota and the little tidbits peppered throughout her book that help bring the reality of Duluth alive to the reader. And the premise of a grandfather who is looking to marry off his grandsons is fantastic! Jonathan and Melissa are rich in detail and quickly hook you with their respective plights. The supporting characters only add to the depth and make for a solid read. Be on the lookout for some great books coming from this author.

1. This is your debut novel! Congratulations! What gave you the inspiration for this story?

The initial idea came from a visit to Duluth MN and loving the setting so much I knew I wanted to write a story set there. Then came some research into the history of the city. And then one day I was sitting in church waiting for the service to start when the idea of a shipping tycoon wanting to marry off his grandsons came to me.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

I can't think of anything specifically as far as character traits. I do know that I've prayed Jonathan's prayer before, that God would change someone else, when in reality, I was the one who needed changing.

3. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Melissa would probably be strawberry since she loves pink. Jonathan, Cookies and Creme, smooth, creamy, and full of little surprises.

4. Are there any themes in The Bartered Bride that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

The theme of God's sovereignty is fairly overt. More subtle would be His trustworthiness. Not only is He in control, but He can be trusted to work things out for our good and His glory.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

This book flowed really well. I wrote that first draft in about five weeks one summer. My favorite parts of this book to write were actually the most difficult as well. The ending provided lots of challenges, but I'm very pleased with how it came off.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next book is The Marriage Masquerade, which is the story of Noah Kennebrae, Jonathan's brother. It comes out early next year.

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

Our story is about four sisters, and when I drew the third sister, I modelled her after children I knew who were the third child in a family of four. Often these children have a hard time finding where they fit in, and Sarah is no different. She struggles with her lack of household skills and the desire to be outside, training her father’s horses—something she’s especially gifted at doing.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

It varies, depending on the character. Some reflect me more than others. My hero, Carson Romero, is half Scottish and half Mexican. He lives in western Texas in a time where it wasn’t cool to be a Mexican. He longs to be respected for the God fearing man he is on the inside and not rejected because of the color of his skin.

3. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Carson would be Vanilla Caramel Swirl, and Sarah would be something very different like Banana Split ice cream. She’s vanilla, a real woman, with flavors unique to herself mixed in.

4. Are there any themes in Wild West Christmas that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

There’s the one I’ve already mention of judging people based on their looks or ethnicity. There’s also sibling rivalry, a woman struggling in a man’s word, and western issues like cattle rustling.

Themes that weren't overt? Not in my story, because I had it planned out pretty well before I started writing it. I can’t really speak for the other authors, but each of our heroines had their own problems.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

Carson was such a good man, that it sometimes hard to make him suffer and for people to treat him unfairly. I really like my opening where Sarah is dressed like a man so she can compete in a local horse race. Her oldest sister finds her and threatens to tell their pa if she doesn’t change. What Sarah did next was fun to write. Also, I enjoyed the horse race where Carson competed against Sarah, and later, their developing romance.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

Besides Wild West Christmas, I also have another Christmas anthology now out called A Blue and Gray Christmas and contains four novellas set against the backdrop of the Civil War.

I’d also like to tell your readers about my long fiction series that debuts next spring. The Anonymous Bride is the first book in my Texas Boardinghouse Brides series, which debuts next April. It's the story of a town marshal who suddenly has three mail-order brides arrive in town, each expecting to marry him. The thing is—he didn’t order a bride. Here’s a link if you’d like to know more.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

It is a continuation of the story of my Huguenot (French Protestants) ancestors' flight from the persecution of the Catholic government in 17th century France. The story line of "Prisoner" is entirely fictionalized, but the historical facts are accurate.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

I think within every character developed by an author at least germs of the author's own experiences lie embedded. In "Prisoner" there is a point where my heroine is angry with God and offended because of her circumstances, and she rails against him. I have been there. I have been offended by things in my life that God allowed -- illness, loss of career, a rebellious child.

I don't know that I would have the courage that Madeleine had to formulate a plot and carry it through to save my family. Although she experienced periods of weakness, she was victorious in the end and was able to remove them from harm's way.

3. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

She is anything but plain vanilla, so I'm going to say Jamoca Almond Fudge. She has a strong flavor to her personality, with some "hard" places, but also with swirls of richness and sweetness.

4. Are there any themes in A Prisoner of Versailles that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

That the journey of faith is never easy, and all of us fail from time to time, but God is faithful.

The theme of forgiveness and reconciliation as illustrated by the relationship between Pierre, the courtier and Madeleine's rescuer, and his father, Commander Bovee. The Commander had not been a father to his son as he pursued his career as a dragoon soldier serving the court of King Louis XIV, but the two are reconciled as the story progresses.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The most difficult thing for me was giving layers to Madeleine, my heroine, to make her relatable. I gave her character flaws; cited her failures; made her vulnerable, but for some reason, she was still difficult for some readers to relate to. I worked really hard on that, but that is difficult when the female protagonist is a strong woman.

I think one of the best scenes is when King Louis is questioning Pierre about his mission to find Madeleine. The double talk that Pierre has to maneuver through to avoid giving himself or Madeleine away without lying was fun to write, but a bit tricky.

Writing the dance scenes was fun. I actually found videos of 17th century French dances and viewed them over and over.

I also like the scene where Commander Bovee ambushes King Louis' soldiers. I think it is tight and full of page-turning tension.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

When Hearts Are Free comes out in the fall of 2010. The story takes up six years later in Pennsylvania where the Clavells have settled. Madeleine is still a part of the story, but the new heroine is Madeleine's son, Philippe's, love interest, Brigitte Barrington. Philippe and his brother have been indentured as servants in Philadelphia, and the story deals with their adventures to be free and settle with the family, and the troubled romance between Brigitte and Philippe. My ancestors actually were indentured as servants in Philadelphia.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I spent a few years working as a park ranger at Shiloh National Military Park. I absolutely loved my job, but at the same time realized it was very unique. Not many people dress up like a Civil War soldier and fire a musket on a daily basis! Ever since then, I’ve wanted to use Shiloh as the setting for a novel.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

I think my own life experiences helped me better understand how a character might react to a particular situation. I might draw from an experience I’ve gone through, yet magnify it in a big way. For example, I know what it feels like to experience a break up, but for my character I kicked it up several notches—and she’s actually left at the altar. So while there might be bits and pieces of myself in some of my characters, the things they experience and the way they handle them are totally their own.

3. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Ace Kennedy would be rocky road because he’s very sweet, yet a little unpredictable.

Kristy O’Neal would be vanilla with a hard chocolate shell because on the surface, she comes across as tough and unemotional, but once you get to know her, she’s actually very vulnerable.

4. Are there any themes in Love is a Battlefield that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

The theme of forgiveness is really central to Love is a Battlefield. Kristy’s journey allows her to understand how important (although not always easy) it is to forgive those who’ve hurt her, and how freeing that can be.

I think the underlying theme is of friendship. Even though Kristy and her two best friends are separated by miles, each time they see each other it’s as if no time has passed.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The most difficult chapters for me to write had to do with an accident and it’s aftermath. I don’t want to give too much away, but those scenes were very emotional, both to write and to read. Even though Love is a Battlefield is a light read, I didn’t want to gloss over anything. So trying to keep the right balance of seriousness, yet still have a touch of humor was hard during those scenes.

My favorite part to write was probably the “one question” game that Kristy and Ace play to pass the time while they’re on night patrol. It was fun coming up with questions for them to ask each other and of course, figuring out what their answers would be.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

Next to release is Love is Monumental, book two in the Walk in the Park series. It’s set at the Washington Monument and surrounding area in Washington D.C. It releases in May 2010. Here’s a blurb:

Blog Tour - Pearl Girls

I'm thrilled to be part of this tour, so I can share with you a fantastic grass-roots endeavor to uplift, encourage, inspire and touch hearts from women to women.

About the book:

With His love and grace, God covered the unexpected pain in my life of becoming an adult orphan and transformed this pain into a pearl. We are all Pearl Girls. Each of us has been touched by God's gift of love and grace, and it's a gift that I want to share with others. That's why I am launching Pearl Girls.

Actually, my very first gift from my parents was a pearl. The gift of my name. Margaret means "precious pearl." So perhaps this is what I was always supposed to do. After several long hours of sorting, I received an incredible hug from heaven - a confirmation that Pearl Girls is something that is meant to be. I discovered a three strand necklace of painted pearls belonging to my grandmother from the early 1900s! Isn't that amazing?

1.What was the inspiration behind teaming together to present the information you share in this manner?

I knew Jill’s book So You Want to be a Stay At Home Mom was being released and I contacted Jill about how I could help her promote it. She’s been great about featuring my writing on her website, Christian Work at Home Moms (cwahm.com) and I wanted to return the favor. We scheduled a phone conference to brainstorm together. The teleseminar series was the result of that call.

Jill: It's been such a blessing to work with Mary. It was amazing to both of us as we talked through our experiences and the areas that we felt were our strong points we found that we complimented each other. God has developed different areas in each of our lives and businesses. What an amazing God we serve!

2. How long did it take you to establish your at-home business, and what were 1-2 hurdles you had to jump in order to successfully get things started?

Mary: I left full time employment outside the home to be with my kids. When others learned I was no longer working, they started calling to see if I was available for project work. So, my business really started itself. The hurdles I faced were juggling the needs of very young children (my son was a newborn when I started) with client needs. And I also had to overcome the superwoman syndrome which led me to believe I really could handle everything all at once. I’m glad I don’t believe that anymore!

Jill: I started working at home part-time and within a year I was at-home full-time. I've done whatever it took to stay here - data entry, direct sales - while building my business. One of the things I struggled with in the beginning was truly treating my business as a "business." In the beginning, my website was just a fun project that I hoped would help me find a way to work from home. Once I realized that I had a business right under my nose I began to treat it as a business (and not a hobby or project). That was when I started seeing true growth in the business.

3. How long did it take before your business became profitable? What would you do differently if you could start over again?

Mary: Because my overhead was so low, I was profitable almost from the beginning. But I think my “profit” the first year was somewhere around $3,000. So I certainly wasn’t rolling in the dough! If I could start over I know exactly what I’d do: I relax more, worry less and spend more time enjoying my children. Had I known I’d still be in business over a decade after I started, I wouldn’t have worried nearly as much as I did in the early days.

Jill: My experience was much like Mary's. I brought in an income within just a few months, but it wasn't enough to even buy groceries. :) If I could start over I would outsource more from the very beginning and leave myself more time to do some of the tasks that can only be done by me (writing, etc). I would also strive to have more confidence in God (and in myself because of Him) instead of constantly doubting.

4. If you were to describe yourself using an ice cream flavor, what flavor would you be and why?

Mary: Neapolitan—the ice cream that blends vanilla, chocolate and strawberry together because that’s what a work-at-home mom is: a blend of wife, mother and entrepreneur all under one roof!

Jill: I love Mary's answer! But, I consider myself Cookie Dough. You're not sure how it can possibly be any good, but one taste reveals that maybe the Creator knew what He was doing after all! :)

5. If someone were to ask you to give them 2 things you wish you knew when you started your at-home business, what would they be?

Mary: That it would be the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Balancing work at family without the support of regular childcare is difficult. I’ve talked to so many moms who are relieved when they realize that it’s not them—it’s the path we’ve chosen. It’s hard, but it’s manageable. But we have to be willing to look at things differently than a woman who works outside the home from profit. Also, I wish I had known that my times of self-doubt would be great periods of self-growth. Now, when I’m scared about solving a problem, I see it for what it is: a chance to increase my value to clients. I still have moments of doubt, but they don’t mess with me emotionally like they did earlier in my career.

Jill: I would encourage them not to compare themselves with other moms or other business owners. God has a path for each of us and we have to trust that He knows what's best for us. I would also encourage them to make sure they have a support system in place. Especially in the beginning, it takes a LOT of time to get the foundation of a new business built. If you have people in place to help you - in business, with the kids, etc - things will go much more smoothly.
